What is the Consumer Price Index?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services — from groceries and gasoline to rent and medical care.

CPI is the most widely used gauge of inflation. Central banks reference it when setting interest rates, governments use it to adjust benefits and tax brackets, and businesses watch it to plan wages and pricing.

Headline CPI reflects the full basket, while Core CPI excludes volatile food and energy prices to show the underlying trend.
